Back in 2019 September when we were able to be about the world we spent a short but full day in Genoa to visit the Staglieno Cemetery. My wife had always wanted to visit and so I was taken along for the journey. Now that I have had some free time to go over old photos, I am in awe of the art that we were lucky enough to see. The memorial statues that adorn the tombs besides being brilliant technical pieces of art are even more moving than they are beautiful. The sentiments of loss, love and hope had their biggest impact on me when looking back on these. I can’t wait to print a book of these images, so I can hold them in my hands and share them.
The photo below is the Appiani family tomb that was photographed by Bernard Pierre in 1978 and later used onto cover of Joy Division’s second and final album Closer. It was a surreal moment to see it in person and make a photograph. You can learn more about the album here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closer_(Joy_Division_album)
The sense of love and loss is very real when you walk amongst the tributes at Staglieno. There is so much more I would like to share of my time here in Genoa and its beautiful cemetery, but you really can’t beat being there or holding a print of these beautiful objects.
